Introduction

Dear Friends,

We now conclude the series of blogs on Obesity. So, let’s recollect what we have learnt about obesity so far.

Earlier, I had written artcles on these topics- you can click the links below to read them-

  1. BMI
  2. WHR
  3. BMR

To summarize- Obesity depends upon: –

A] BMI or body mass index—

Your BMI is calculated as your body weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in centimeters.

1]below 18—underweight

2]18 to 25—-normal weight

3]25 to 30—overweight

4]above 30—obese.

You can easily calculate your BMI using this app-

BMI Calculator – Body Mass Index

B] WHR or waist to hip ratio

This is calculated as your waist circumference divided by the hip circumference. You can use any unit- centimeters or inches to calculate it- all you need is a meaturing tape.

1] male –should be below 0.95

2]female—should be below 0.85

You can easily calculate this using this app-

C] BMR or basal metabolic rate

Your BMR varies with skeletal muscle mass and body fat composition of each individual which can be calculated to help in reducing body weight if overweight/obese. Shown below is table to calculate your BMR easily according to your age, body build and weight.

Age GroupBody BuildBMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)
18-30Slim22.5 x weight (in kg)
18-30Average24.0 x weight (in kg)
18-30Athletic25.5 x weight (in kg)
31-60Slim21.7 x weight (in kg)
31-60Average23.3 x weight (in kg)
31-60Athletic24.8 x weight (in kg)

You can also calculate easily here-

D] Total body fat/visceral fat mass–

This can be measured by bio-impedance machine or a smart scale that show all the parameters from total body fats, subcutaneous fats to visceral fats.

This can be used in helping us to reduce visceral fat which causes diseases like hypertension, diabetes, arthritis etc.

You can calculate your total body fat using this app-

Army Body Fat Calculator

However, if you want to know the exact values of your body composition, you should use an instrument called skinfold caliper or a smart scale.

You can also use this table total body fat percentage, visceral fat and subcutaneous fat in a person with ideal body weight and calculate your own bodyfat composition after calculating your total body fat using the above app-

IndicatorPercentage
Total body fat20%
Visceral fat10%
Subcutaneous fat10%
